Virtual Data Centers

The Virtual Data Center is where the work happens. This article explains the page and what each tab is for.

A Virtual Data Center, often shortened to VDC, is a self contained environment inside a tenant with a pool of CPU, memory and storage allocated to it. Virtual machines and internal networks live inside a VDC and cannot spill outside it.

We recommend a separate VDC per customer site or deployment, so that resource use and invoicing line up neatly.

To open one, click Virtual Data Centers in the left sidebar and click the name in the list.

The tabs on a Virtual Data Center

  • Virtual Machines. Every VM in the VDC, with its power state, CPU and memory. This is also where the New Virtual Machine button lives

  • Usage. How much of the allocated CPU, memory and storage is being consumed

  • Storage Policies. The storage tiers available to this VDC and how much of each is in use

  • Backups. Restore points that exist for the machines in this VDC

  • Backup Jobs. The schedules that create those restore points

  • Task Log. A history of actions run against this VDC, useful when something did not do what you expected

Creating a Virtual Data Center

This depends on your service model. If your resource pool sits on the Virtual Data Center, Hosted Network creates it for you, so raise a request telling us the tenant, the data centre location and the CPU, memory and storage you need. If your pool sits on your reseller account, open the tenant and use the New Virtual Data Center button, then allocate resource to it from your pool.
