Tenant Impersonation

Some functions are only available inside the tenant. This article explains how to impersonate a tenant administrator and when you should.

Your reseller account is a single pane of glass to all tenants, but it is not the best place to do day to day work. A few functions are only exposed at tenant level, including deploying a virtual machine from a template. The recommended way to work inside a customer environment is to impersonate that customer's tenant administrator.

Impersonation signs you in as that tenant user without needing their password. Everything you do while impersonating is done as that user.

Before you start

Your user role needs Impersonation Permission enabled. If the icon described below is missing, raise a request with Hosted Network support.

How to impersonate a tenant administrator

To do this follow the steps below:

  • Click Tenants in the left sidebar and open the customer you want to work in

  • Scroll down to the Tenant Users card

  • Find the user with the Tenant Administrator role

  • Click the impersonate icon at the right of that row, below the eye and pencil icons

You are now signed in as that user and the portal shows only their tenant.

How to return to your own account

Click Return to My Account at the top of any page. Always do this when you have finished, so that later work is not recorded against the customer's user.

What to do at each level

Do the following while impersonating the tenant administrator:

  • Create and manage virtual machines, including deploying from a template

  • Create and manage internal networks

  • Take snapshots and clone virtual machines

  • Check backups and backup jobs

Do the following from your own reseller account:

  • Create tenants and tenant users

  • Create user roles

  • Review resource usage across all your customers
