Creating VMs from templates

Deploying a machine from a prebuilt template instead of building it from scratch.

A template is a prebuilt machine image with the operating system already installed. Deploying from a template takes minutes and saves you repeating the same build for every customer.

From Template only works when you are signed in at the tenant level. If you try it from your reseller account the portal returns an error, so impersonate the tenant administrator first.

Before you start

  • Impersonate the tenant administrator for the customer you are building for

  • Check the Virtual Data Center has enough spare CPU, memory and storage for the new machine

  • Decide which internal network the machine should sit on

How to deploy from a template

  • Open the Virtual Data Center you want to build in

  • Click the arrow on the right of the New Virtual Machine button

  • Choose From Template

  • Select the template you want to deploy and give the new machine a name

  • Review the CPU, memory, storage and network settings that come from the template and change anything the customer needs different

  • Confirm to build the machine

If you see an error

  • Error loading content when you choose From Template almost always means you are still in your reseller account rather than in the tenant

  • Return to your own account, open the tenant, impersonate the tenant administrator and try again

  • If the error continues, or the template you need is not listed, raise a request with Hosted Network support
