Account hierarchy

How the reseller, tenant and Virtual Data Center layers fit together, and how to tell which one you are working at.

MultiPortal is a multi tenant platform, so it is split into layers. Each layer only sees the workloads it has access to, which means you can give an end customer access to their own environment without exposing anyone else's.

Reseller

• This is the default level for a Hosted Network partner login, and it can see every tenant, Virtual Data Center and virtual machine underneath it.

• Reseller level is where you manage tenants, reseller networks and the user roles for your own team.

• Where your resource pool sits depends on which model you bought. See Service Models.

Tenant

• A tenant usually represents one end customer, and holds all of their Virtual Data Centers and workloads in one interface.

• Workloads can be spread across the different data centre locations where MultiPortal is available and still be managed from the same tenant.

• You can give an end customer a login to their own tenant without giving them visibility of any of your other customers.

• Some features, such as the catalogue and deploying a machine from a template, are only available at tenant level. See Working in a tenant.

Virtual Data Center

• A Virtual Data Center, or vDC, is a collection of workloads for a specific deployment or location, for example MP-SYDNEY.

• CPU, memory and storage limits are applied at this level, and it is where virtual machines are built.

• Each vDC can have isolated internal networks that only its own machines can reach, as well as links to external networks.

• A tenant can have more than one vDC, which is how you separate sites, environments or locations for the same customer.

How to tell which layer you are working at

• The account panel in the top right shows the account name and the level below it, for example Demo Reseller / Reseller.

• The breadcrumb at the top right of each page shows the path you drilled down through, for example Home > Virtual Data Center.

• Tenants and User Roles only appear in the menu at reseller level. Catalogue and Backup Management only appear at tenant level.

• While you are impersonating another account, a Return to My Account link is shown at the top of the page.

If a button or menu item you expect is not there, you are probably at the wrong layer. Impersonating the tenant administrator is the usual fix, and it is covered in Working in a tenant.
